Prepare For Your Skip to Arrive

To plan for the arrival of your skip, you need to think about where it will be located when it is delivered. When choosing, take into consideration that it has to be on a flat, stable surface and that you will need some space around it for tipping in large objects.

Will it be on your driveway? If so, is this easily accessible for our one of our drivers to line up the truck with?

Will it be on a road in front of your house? If you want to position a skip on a public road, this requires a permit. We will happily help with arranging a permit, so let us know in advance if this is the case.

Once you have decided where you want your skip, give clear instructions to the driver dropping it off. They are extremely heavy so after it has been delivered, do not attempt to move the skip. Rather than moving it, you will only end up injuring yourself!

Load Your Skip Safely & Efficiently

So, your skip has arrived, now it’s the fun part where you get to start start filling it.

Though however tempting it may be, do not just rush and throw any waste you find straight in there. Believe it or not, there is an art to loading a skip (sort of).

It is always best to load large but light items first. This way, they can be compressed by large heavy objects that you place on top of them. As you pile more heavy items on, the lighter waste at the bottom will be pushed down further into the base of the skip, creating more room above. Small or malleable materials such as soil, should be loaded last, as these will naturally fill the spaces in and around the large items. This is the most efficient way to maximise space in your skip!

When loading those heavy items, make sure to carry them in a safe fashion, asking for another pair of hands if necessary. To avoid injury, bend your knees and lift with your legs rather than your back.

Things to Keep in Mind

Once your skip is loaded, arrange a time with us for it to be collected. However, it is important to keep in mind that for health & safety reasons we cannot collect skips under the following conditions:

If they are overfilled –

We all like to get our money’s worth, but overfilling a skip is dangerous for obvious reasons. Not only is it unsafe, but it is in fact illegal for a skip company to move an overfilled skip. To make sure we can collect it, aim to keep your waste below the skip sides.

If it contains hazardous waste –

For environmental reasons, hazardous waste needs to be dealt with separately to general waste. Therefore we do not collect skips that contain hazardous waste. This includes, but is not limited to, fridges, freezers, gas canisters, asbestos, tyres, batteries, computers and microwaves.
