Skip Hire Nottingham FAQs

Skips are sometimes referred to by different names such as a builder’s skip, so it can be difficult to know which size skip you might need. At Colsons we like to make this simple for you in our skip size guide.

Skips are measured in cubic yards – The smallest skips we have available in Nottingham are 2 yard skips (also known as a mini skip). After that we have 4, 8, 12, 20, 30 and 40 yard skips available for hire. The larger ones are typically only for commercial use.

Our standard skip hire length for Nottingham and Derbyshire is 10 days. However, should you require your skip for longer, you can extend this week by week for just a small charge. When it is ready for collection, let us know and we will endeavour to collect it as soon as possible.

If you need to extend the hire period you can contact us to organise. There may be an extra charge on this depending on demand.

Skips are generally quite a flexible waste removal solution. However there are restrictions on what wastes can go in each skip and mixing of waste types.

Generally standard household and business bulky waste can be thrown in, as well as standard garden and construction waste. Items that can’t be put in a skip include: Large electrical items, food waste, hazardous waste, chemicals and solvents, plasterboard and gypsum.

You can place a skip on or off road – If it’s going to be on the road, you’ll need a skip permit (see question below).

Off road means keeping it on your private land. This is often a driveway, private car park, courtyard or similar. It must be land you control or have permission to use for a period of time.

All skips can be placed off road on private land and they can usually be delivered fast, sometimes as quickly as the next day!

Placing your skip on public land requires a lot more consideration as you’ll need a ‘skip permit’ from the local council. Skip sizes larger than 8 cubic yards are not generally able to be placed on the roads in Nottingham. Keep in mind that it can take a while for your skip permit application to go through. If you need assistance with getting a permit, just let us know when you hire your skip and we can assist you with this.

If you are placing your skip on the public highway you will need a skip permit. Skip permits are issued by your local council in Nottingham and Derbyshire.

If you hire a skip with Colson Transport, we can get the skip permit for you and the cost of the permit will be added on to your hire quote (let us know when you book if you need a permit).

Skip permits have an expiry date so we must ensure your skip has been removed by this date. This means that if you haven’t requested collection your skip may have to be taken, regardless of whether you have finished using it (it is a legal requirement!)

If you plan to place your skip on the road, speak to a member of our team before hiring to ensure you do it legally.

Whilst our prices are based around the needs of the customer, what size you are looking for, and for how long, our skip hire services can be accessed from as little as £144 for a 2-yard mini-skip. We also offer an extended hire for a small charge, after the 10-day standard period is over. With our skip hire services available to book online, you can access our pricing system simply by providing us with your postcode and the type of skip you wish to hire.

When provided with a quote, you will then be given the option to proceed with the booking. If you’re struggling to find the skip you wish to hire, fill in our contact form and someone will be in touch with you as soon as possible.

If your hired skip will be placed on private land, then you will not need to apply for a permit as it is not a requirement. However, if your skip is located on a road or public highway, then you need a permit.

Permits will only be granted by the local council if the application has been submitted by the company. We work with our customers to ensure they are complying with all rules and regulations of skip hire. Read more about skip hire permits on your local city or county council’s website.

Once you have finished with your skip, whether the hire period was 10 days or longer, you will need the skip to be collected. We won’t rush you to return your skip, but once it needs collecting we offer a prompt pick-up service. Simply contact Colson Skips and let us know what you need to be collected.

Fill in our form to organise the collection of your skip or skip bag and provide us with the desired pick-up date, we will take care of the rest. Please keep in mind that if your skip hasn’t complied with our guidelines, for example exceeding the maximum height, then we will be unable to safely collect your skip.

At Colson Skips we aim to recycle over 95% of the waste we collect from customers, rather than it going to landfills. Your waste will be given a new life, whether it’s in the form of compost or even new furniture.

We avoid landfills as much as possible, aware of the negative impact these have on the environment. New EU and UK legislation guarantees that skip hire companies dispose of waste in environmentally friendly ways.
