    Skip Hire FAQs

Which Skip Sizes Do Colson Offer in Nottingham?

Skips are sometimes referred to by different names such as a builder’s skip, so it can be difficult to know which size skip you might need. At Colsons we like to make this simple for you in our skip size guide.

Skips are measured in cubic yards – The smallest skips we have available in are 2 yard skips (also known as a mini skip). After that we have 4, 8, 12, 20, 30 and 40 yard skips available for hire. The larger ones are typically only for commercial use.

Where Can I Put A Skip?

Generally, standard household and business bulky waste can be thrown in, as well as standard garden and construction waste. Items that can’t be put in a skip include Large electrical items, food waste, hazardous waste, chemicals and solvents, plasterboard and gypsum. If your hired skip will be placed on private land, then you will not need to apply for a permit as it is not a requirement. However, if your skip is located on a road or public highway, then you need a permit.

Permits will only be granted by the local council if the application has been submitted by the company. We work with our customers to ensure they are complying with all rules and regulations of skip hire. Read more about skip hire permits on your local city or county council’s website.

Can I Use Skip Hire For Construction Projects?

Yes. Colson skips increase in size all the way up to 40 cubic yards, perfectly suited for those looking to expand or build. For both commercial and domestic use, our skip hire service is dedicated to providing each customer with the skip they need.

Our 20 cubic yard skip is designed for building work and heavy waste, with the 30 and 40 cubic yards better suited to light building waste. Choose the skip that’s right for you and contact us today with any further queries.

Can You Collect My Skip Once I’m Done?

Once you have finished with your skip, whether the hire period was 10 days or longer, you will need the skip to be collected. We won’t rush you to return your skip, but once it needs collecting we offer a prompt pick-up service. Simply contact Colson Skips and let us know what you need to be collected.

Fill in our form to organise the collection of your skip or skip bag and provide us with the desired pick-up date, we will take care of the rest.

Please keep in mind that if your skip hasn’t complied with our guidelines, for example exceeding the maximum height, then we will be unable to safely collect your skip.

What Happens To The Skip Waste?

At Colson Skips we aim to recycle over 95% of the waste we collect from customers, rather than it going to landfills. The different materials, such as tin or fabrics, are then taken to the appropriate recycling facilities. Your waste will be given a new life, whether it’s in the form of compost or even new furniture.

We avoid landfills as much as possible, aware of the negative impact these have on the environment. New EU and UK legislation guarantees that skip hire companies dispose of waste in environmentally friendly ways.
